[LUG]Re: Domain and Website

Hi Alex

Thanks for this, I think given my IT skills, or rather lack of in the back end area, as we already have hosting, maybe we could just use what we have. If Simon and others can maintain the back end, (dns, ssl certs etc) then I am happy to help maintain the site, even have admin to grav.

I am currently admin on dcglug.zleap.net as I set this up. I have Given 2 others access but they are not admin as yet. As long as a few of us have access (with appropriate permissions). I am not sure what Joseph did on some of the pages but the formatting is really nice

Compared to my meetings page

https://www.dcglug.zleap.net/home/meetings

I am still learning in that respect.

Updating grav is a case of clicking update on the dashboard page, and it lets you know when updates for grav and any plugins are available.

With regard to FAQ page - done, I have just copied the content to faq.md and have made the various web links. I just need to get the e-mail links working and I can then add the page to the site.

Most of the other content has either been moved over, or removed such as in the case of the xchat page, which no longer exists (now hexchat).

I do agree with Julian, one person should not be sole controlled and also the idea of a bank account, it could make it easier to raise funds for things, paying for the domain etc.

I also agree we need to get Simon's view on all this.

Hope this helps

Paul

Hi Paul,

I'm quite happy with the idea of updating to a modern site, and your desire to take that on is certainly appreciated!

Do you want to host the site yourself?  If so all that needs arranging is to ensure we maintain the needed content from the old site (the list FAQ being something that comes to mind) - and then I can point the DNS records for dcglug.org.uk and www.dcglug.org.uk to you.  You'll just need to configure your webserver for those hostnames and get a SSL certificate to match.

It's then important to ensure the setup remains secure in the future keeping the server and CMS software patched and well configured.

But as Simon currently has the website he may have other opinions here so I'd want his input.

Thanks,
Alex.

Hi Alex

Thanks for this, the proposed new site we are working on is here

https://www.dcglug.zleap.net/

Probably needs a little more doing to it, but I think it is nearly there,  I am not too sure how themes work though,  but I think right now it is just nice, simple and gets lots of useful information across.

There are 3 people with access (inc myself) at the moment.

Grant S has access to the server, this is hosted on, as he is hosting my site,  which this is a subdomain, so I am kinda guessing that as I can create a backup of the site date.

In which case, would the process be replace Wordpress with Grav the restoring the site from back up.?

I appreciate people are busy, life, work etc,  if we do point the domain to the above,  I should probably put a note to that effect on the home page so people don't get confused as to why it points to somewhere different.

I think to be fair on admins here it is a case of what ever works best for people.

Regards

Paul

Hello,

Yes some of the investigation is correct, the responsibilities break down as follows:

Website/Mailing list Archive: Simon
Domain Ownership/Registration: Matt
DNS/Email/Mailman: Me

So I'm able to re-point the DNS but I'd like Simon's agreement that is the thing he wants to do.

Thanks,
Alex.

Hi

I just wondered who was in control of the Domain name for the lug and the hosting.?

I am just asking as the current website is getting rather old, and harder for me to maintain,  so as I have my own domain, I set up grav (which is what I use on my website) on a subdomain have along with a few other lug members on the Matrix channel have been working on a potential new website.

I felt doing this was better than just posting here to the list that we need a better and as I was mostly the one trying to keep it going, decided to see if I can create something that has more up to date information and is easier to maintain.

Just asking.

Thanks

Paul
