Re: [LUG] '4 areas where LINUX still FAILS compared to other operating systems'

I like linux and use it more than any other OS. I've been using linux from the outset and unix before that. I remember reading discussions about linux on usenet news groups via a DEC Vax 11-785 terminal before it was called linux, a mad scandinavian student writing his own operating system based on unix. I have not watched the video as like others, I prefer getting the content as text, but from the title alone I am inclined to say linux does fall down in several areas for the vast majority of computer users.

Doing fairly basic things with hardware can be a pain, as can finding simple easy ways to do simple tasks - open source software can be overcomplicated for the average user and sometimes a long way short of user friendly. I know there are communities and forums where help can be found, but often the only help given to those who need it is "RTFM".

I saw classic example of this back when the raspberry pi was just coming out. There was a coding contest for kids, but demand for the pi outstripped supply and many eager kids could not get their pi on time due to delays and long waiting lists. Some were enterprising enough to look for a solution on the raspberry pi forums, qemu was mentioned and it started to look like there was a possible way forward.. until more experienced linux users started telling primary school kids to "RTFM".

For setting up a raspberry pi emulation on windows.

There was no manual for that at that time, just differing vague sets of incomplete or unclear instructions that used kernels not available for download.. Find me a good walk though even now 10 years later, that a 10 year old can understand, for compiling a kernel on windows to make raspbian run under qemu in windows.

That is just one example. The same attitude rears its ugly head all over the place. It seems to be some stupid techie machismo version of "I can eat hotter chillies than you", "well I don't use a gui text editor I use vim", "ooh well I use vi". Perhaps if you are modifying something on a tiny embedded system where only vi is available that is a good reason to use it. Day to day on a workstation?! NO! It's 2022 not 1976.

That's my few pence worth!

The point of this video was exclusively to get views and subscribers in
order to gain advertising revenue. Nothing less, YouTube is littered
with videos about contentious issues for this very purpose.
