Now that definitely is an option worth looking at, and a properly setup
'live' USB Linux instance with persistence is a really handy thing to
have to hand anyway, so that's a good point. The only issue then is the
relatively terrible bandwidth and latency of even v3 flavoured USB vs
SATA. His laptop doesn't have enough RAM to cache the entire OS and
service normal running overheads either which is why I initially
discounted it. And your warning about being really careful with the GRUB
install is spot on!

I'm pretty sure Anthony said the laptop in question is already dual
booting Windows, and it doesn't work there either - and he has internal
and external DVD drives on hand, so I presume he's tried both drives
under both operating systems on the same machine as well as 2 (?) other
Linux laptops he's got in the house so he has really covered the obvious
options already. If anything the real surprise is that the DVD in
question has managed to play back correctly on anything!
