Windows 98 boot floppy from www.bootdisk.com , then scandisk to make 
sure there are no *hardware* problems, stuffed sectors etc.  I had this 
once and had to get the HD replaced under warranty.  Once you know the 
hardware is kosher then you can worry about software issues.
