After some testing with different cables, I'm fairly confident this is yet another USB C cable dying. Seems optical fibre to your head and waving your arms around don't mix well. But it is hard to be confident. If anyone needs secondhand USB C or USB A to USB C cables which are really long and only good for charging :( Now waiting for replacement cable to be delivered, except according the vendor it was delivered too me yesterday, when I was out.
