It seems to allow permission mount the device but not to the actual files.

Ok, this definitely seems to be going weirder than expected - this shouldn't really be complicated at all.

Let's see the permissions now:

sudo ls -alh /media/julian

Might be time to create a new test mount point somewhere else and create a new fstab entry/mount unit to enable it if we can't see an obvious problem this time around. The current one seems to be cursed in some subtle way...
