(First laptop for her family work? or shared with you as a family laptop?) I would suggest all her "work files" be saved on a cloud system (Google Docs ?) as then if anything breaks is lost etc. She can retrieve it with any other laptop/machine that can log into cloud. 'Privately Saved' files, that become "not accessible work files" when a machine goes down are the very bane of an employer's 'safety of files'. Any other machine can be substituted for her second laptop in crisis. She should of course also save a local backup to one of your back up hard discs. Does employer not provide a server to store files? (I.e. log into employer's VPN and use employer's server using employer's laptop or provide a VPN log on for you to use on your hardware?) When in similar situation I used: My local machine had copy software and files on its hard disc. I had back up hard disk, made weekly at least.(Risk was loss of one weeks work) I had ability to 'email' each file when saved to employer's distant staff (UK & India), who put file on the work server. It worked for many years. (I did not have VPN access, as computer's were mine, necessary as "mine" to avoid being "an employee" rather than contractor. I took legal sole responsibility for my work, not the company. Company issued laptop's with total control by IT in India/ EU/ Singapore/ USA, had VPNs but I would not let them have access to my house systems, and they would not provide another ISP link second telephone wire for their VPN laptop to use. We compromised on email & my making sure 'office files' were OK when I visited office (roughly once a week) and used a company desktop) -- Regards Eion MacDonald -- The Mailing List for the Devon & Cornwall LUG https://mailman.dcglug.org.uk/listinfo/list FAQ: http://www.dcglug.org.uk/listfaq
