Thanks, I will have a look. What puzzles me a bit is the my desktop

Anyway, it may not be so simple. The method suggested is via using
a USB stick with the MX Linux iso on it. I did try that, but the
laptop will not boot from the stick. I finish up with the same error
message. If it worked I would have tried the boot fix file in MX
Tools.

Dear Neil,

I hope you are doing well laptop-less for the time being - luckily
GRUB problems shouldn't have compromised your files in any way.

Luckily, my desktop computer is the main one. The laptop is more of a spare and a sort of backup for safety. LOL.

That you are seeing the same error message from GRUB even when
attempting to boot from the USB stick is annoying, but not unfixable.
Live USB ISOs are designed for your laptops's BIOS to boot them
directly, without the need for GRUB. If you can get into the laptop's
BIOS settings then there will be an option for changing the boot
sequence to put the Live USB above your laptops internal hard drive
(make sure you have the LIVE USB plugged in before opening the BIOS
settings).

Yes, I can get to the BIOS. But whether that will help I don't know. With this laptop, while logging in, I can use F7 to bring up a login screen from which I can choose from a list of possible log on items, eg the main SSD or the plugged in USB. So the log in order in the BIOS is sort of irrelevant.

If getting into the BIOS is difficult or your BIOS doesn't support
booting from USB (possible if your laptop is more than 10 years old),
then you could try burning the ISO onto a DVD. BIOSs usually default to
a disc if one is available.

The laptop was bought in June 2014 so six years old.

Good luck and best wishes, Sebastian

PS. Technically, the Live USB may use it's own GRUB behind the scenes
but it shouldn't have the same error message as your laptop's GRUB.
