[LUG] Skype part 2

I should have known better.

I used to use Skype back in the day when it was still a Linux program. Then it was bought by MS and I stopped using it.

Recently, with the coronavirus problems, there was a suggestion from the group about using Skype or similar for a meeting via the internet. So, on my laptop, I installed the new Skype. It worked just fine. I set up a launcher icon on the desk top. Because I would want to use it only occasionally I did not want it to start up automatically on log in.

The next time I logged in, the Skype window appeared on my screen. So I checked via Settings -> Session and Startup -> Application Autostart. Sure enough, Skype was there, and checked. So I removed the check-mark. Sorted, I thought.

Next log in Skype appeared again. So I checked again and the check-mark was back. I know, I thought, remove the Skype entry from the Autostart list entirely, that will sort it.

Next log in Skype was back again. The removed entry was now back in Autostart. Now I was annoyed. Typical MS arrogance, and their lack of understanding about how we use Linux. So I have done the only thing left to me and uninstalled the program. Hopefully that will finally sort it out.

If any group meetings are set up using Skype I will not be able to participate. I do have Zoom installed however.

MS did once try to crush Linux. They failed, so now they are trying to cosy up to us, as a sneaky way to gradually take over.

MS seems to have no concept of the difference between closed source programs, like Windows, and FOSS. It appears that they think that their way of "This is how it is done. Take it or leave it" is how it should be for everyone.

I gave up on Windows 20 years ago. Their arrogance and their whole approach to the world of computing, were just not for me. Plus I just did not trust them at all. Now, after all this time, I can see no reason to change my opinion.

I should have known better,

Neil
