If refurbished is the goal may I suggest Ebay? I've had some good bargains on there. Also if warranty is a concern some sellers are companies not private individuals.

Screen losing picture doesn't sound like a hdd problem.
SSDs are stupidly cheap now (small ones, anyway) and are the best way to rejuvenate a sluggish computer. But this sounds like a knackered laptop, and such things are usually best solved by replacing the whole thing.
Refurbed laptops are good value if that is your route.
