Cheers for your help - it seems the router was a bit on the borked side. I had a spare router and swapped that and everything is now hunky dory. It was bizarre - all diagnostics on the old router worked, my phone worked - it just seems when the guests all let loose at once the router couldnt cope. Now an 'identical' router is coping just fine.

Really could do with some 30 year old tech here though....

Given that info - check the manufacturer website for the old router to see if a firmware upgrade is available, if so, apply the new firmware, then reset to factory defaults, and set up the configuration again from scratch.

Do you know whether the Wireless on either/both routers is 802.11ac, 802.11b,g and/or n ?

For b, g & n there are only a handful (3 or 4) non-conflicting channels, i.e. channel 1 and 2 overlap etc... Some channels e.g. 12+ will not function on equipment that has a region code set for North America.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WLAN_channels

Are there many SSIDs visible in the area?

802.11ac has many more channel spaces available (5Ghz band), but I've heard range is not as good.

I know the problem has gone away, but am curious, and predict that the problem might return...

The routers were BT hubs - they update the firmware automatically. A few months ago lightning took out the power supply of the 'original' router. BT sent a replacement router and ps so I just swapped the ps. It is possible the router was slightly borked too but the damage was rarely reached (high ram?), or perhaps there was lightening while we were away for a couple of weeks (got back sunday effectively) or possibly the fact the holiday cottage has a dozen connected devices causes the fault to show (we normally don't get that many devices overall!)

We are quite remote so the only SSIDs are the ones I set up and the occasional phone set as an access point that drives in and out again!

Looking forward to seeing how Airband work out - we may be getting 30meg from them q3 this year according to the council. Just hope I dont need their customer services.....
