I had a similar issue many moons ago... Can't quite remember what it was but as daft and dumbed down as it sounds, I vaguely remember it was how I made the video play..

Think it was along the lines of... Open VLC then from VLC open the file as opposed to just double clicking on the file I wanted to play.

around this morning I find I can do everything now just fine but not
with vlc. It seems broken. Handbrake is working on dvds. I haven't
tried opening a dvd yet using a different player.
