Re: [LUG] Cloud backup

Now that I have this new desktop computer I want to get things done properly. This applies especially to back ups. I have been doing some research into this. There are various choices, as usual.

I would like said backups to work in sync so that a change to a file on my HD would automatically update the backed up version too. Some of the cloud schemes do this. Others seem to be more for sharing files with other people.

What sort of schemes are used by list members? Any advice please?

I use rsync to home and remotely hosted servers. Some I own and some I'm renting. I own and rent servers in 3 separate data centers, as well as my home/office "under the stairs DC" ...

I never found a good automatic file replication type system that I was happy with under Linux. Dropbox came close, but ... Dropbox. I needed one that was transparent to the filesystem and didn't rely on some GUI or other "file manager" type application. Things may have changed since I last looked.

Don't confuse backup with archive though. A backup might let you restore a file you deleted this morning, an archive would allow you to retrieve a version of a file you were working on 5 years ago.
