One day I will learn to read before I post.

In that case you are of course correct... sorry etc.

Some excellent advice there, thanks all.

I do have the main system partition to copy over as well as the "data" partition so will probably go the dd/gparted route

Good call on the SMART check - that 500gb drive has probably been sitting around for a while and I can't remember where it came from.

I'll let you know how things went.

>> "1Gb RAM" in a "server". Haha, no. That's not a server, that's a relic. Let me guess, this is/was one of those hateful HP Microservers right?

Almost. It was a 6-7 yo mini-atx self build. I got conned into buying the wrong mobo and was stuck at 1Gb max but hey, I ran LAMP with about 30 databases, an IMAP email server for x4 users (family + me), SoGo (calendaring & scheduling), Samba and NFS with pretty damn good performance and only ever rebooted after a distribution update (Ubuntu Server LTS). A testament to the quality of (the right) open source software and Linux in general I'd say!!

Cheers

Martin
