Some excellent advice there, thanks all.I do have the main system partition to copy over as well as the "data" partition so will probably go the dd/gparted route
Good call on the SMART check - that 500gb drive has probably been sitting around for a while and I can't remember where it came from.

Almost. It was a 6-7 yo mini-atx self build. I got conned into buying the wrong mobo and was stuck at 1Gb max but hey, I ran LAMP with about 30 databases, an IMAP email server for x4 users (family + me), SoGo (calendaring & scheduling), Samba and NFS with pretty damn good performance and only ever rebooted after a distribution update (Ubuntu Server LTS). A testament to the quality of (the right) open source software and Linux in general I'd say!!
