The thing is, when people do things the open source way there is barrier  thats 
really hard to cross. 

App development is hard and requires specialisation, to put that much effort in, in 
a sustainable and scalable way means a team are at either end of the spectrum of 
freaky zelots with a personal plan to a fully paid team of professionals and 
designers.  There also the issue of patents. there are so many project that can't 
evolve because of patent issues at some level of the software stack. 

and I really do think, there should be a community funded version of the latter to 
complement and enhance the awesome work of the former. Surly Redhat or a top vendor 
could pull something together as we don't all have time to build our own tools.  
remember OS is about free as in liberty, not free as in beer.
