I use it. Mainly for the calendar, but also for saving notes and photos
from my Android tablet.

There is a command-line client: owncloudcmd

The 3C toolbox can do restrict the permissions of installed apps if you
have a rooted device.

I don't mind about granting phone log permissions --- I have a tablet,
not a phone ;-)
