I just tried a
$rsync -a ntp root@NAS:/volume1/dp/pi-03/

instead of the NFS version
$rsync -a ntp dp/pi-03

and this worked without error (I still get permission errors for 
non-root @ NAS)

pi:
-rw-r--r--  1 pi pi  2710 Oct 29  2002 timetrim.c

NAS:
-rw-r--r--    1 pi       1000          2710 Oct 29  2002 timetrim.c

NAS from the Pi:
-rw-r--r-- 1 4294967294 4294967294  2710 Oct 29  2002 timetrim.c
