yep CWM "ClockWorkMod" is a custom recovery that allows the
installation of custom os's and other tweaks. i have always said that
if you can get your phone into recovery then you can get it out of a
soft brick state

Very, very reluctantly, I'm about to give up on the quest to free up
my phone. It seems to require using Chinese-language Android software
and/or software that runs on MS Windows. Very frustrating and
annoying. OK Google, you win this one.

It took quite some digging and trying things out with the potential to brick
my phone (HTC Sensation) but I did eventually find the tools for Linux that
let you communicate with the phone over USB during boot (if you boot to the
boot menu).

I'll have a dig around and see if I can find them on my laptop and if they
have a link to their origins - there might be one for the Galaxy Ace.
