Given that most digital stuff works well at 1.2V and multiple batteries are used in series? There seems to be some collusion with battery manufacturers and equipment makers. I have dismantled a couple of devices ('kids' mainly) and the voltage regulation seems somewhat mendacious - nearly flat rechargeables would provide the power but the regulator seemed designed not to allow it.
May just be shit design, but I have a feeling battery manufacturers may be providing 'free' consultation.
