Can you join the network manually. e.g. Is it just omitting the ESSID from the 
displayed list (some Wireless LANs request this be omitted, some clients sniff them 
out anyway).

What is the router? i.e. Did you google it enough.

Most common issue I saw with Debian was ISC DHCP being too picky, and routers that 
only worked with Redmond DHCP client (goodness knows how vendors manage to break 
DHCP), but sounds like you don't get that far.
