Re: [LUG] Meeting in south east Cornwall

Gordon,

Just turn off _javascript_ and browse the site in text mode… ;o)

Daniel,

I’d love to come down there, but it’s quite a long way from me (I’m out in the sticks near Holsworthy), so I doubt I’ll make it there – wherever it is – if you use the non-flash site there’s no address mentioned anywhere – not good for any kind of business.

(If it is there and I just didn’t see it – it’s still not visible enough J)

  Anyway…

I setup a small bird watching RasPi a while back – it was just a Logitech webcam stuck on the Pi, with Motion running on Raspbian. It was a great starting point – virtually worked straight away.

The biggest problem I had was with power and making the whole thing weather proof… in the end the project fizzled out as the birds abandoned the nest…

  Anyway – some pointers:

If you’re using batteries, a Model A’s uses less power: http://www.raspberrypi-spy.co.uk/2013/02/running-a-raspberry-pi-from-6-aa-batteries/

The Pi’s Camera module uses less power than a webcam (and 1 less USB port…), but I’ve not tried Motion with it

You will need to steal a decent Tupperware container to put the Pi in, to make sure it doesn’t get wet J

Setup Motion to write data to a non-volatile location – by default (I think) it puts all the videos / photos in /tmp, so when you power it off it’s all gone…

Hope that helps…

Cheers,

Steve

Hi i'm daniel, i am putting out some feelers to see if anyone would like to

It's

  http://makerjunction.org.uk/

and it's a truly terrible website. 100% flash )-:

I'm sure it's a great little place and a wholly support CIC's too, but I feel they're doing themselves a huge disservice by having their website entirely in flash.

I'm also seeing errors in some of the pages too - e.g.

  File not found

Firefox can't find the file at http://makerjunction.org.uk/cgi-bin/snippet.cgi?todo=as_page&instance=4570722290&num=2.

on the "find us" page...

Please help them to see the light and dump flash!

Gordon
