You're called mobile phones running in hotspot mode... Saves you
getting a 2nd SIM, etc. but I have some giffGaff sims if you need ;-)

I was under the impression that Giffgaff don't allow tethering on mobile plans (although saying that, Three didn't allow tethering when I had a Galaxy S on contract and it still worked).

Saying that I can recommend Giffgaff, they're cheap if you don't want to be tied into a contract.

If you don't mind a contract, Three offer The One Plan with "all you can eat data" on a 1 month or 12 month SIM only contract. I'm on The One Plan with a phone and they do allow tethering and the data is unlimited (well, I've download multiple gigabytes and not had any warnings about my usage, I read that a magazine tested it too and downloaded nearly 1TB in a month).

I was thinking of dumping smart phones and just use an old fashion voice
and text. Anything for a good battery life..

But then I need a "mifi"

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Huawei-E5331-Speed-21-1Mbps-Unlocked/dp/B00ARFVTKS/ref=sr_1_1/276-9791670-6069410?ie=UTF8&qid=1379502781&sr=8-1&keywords=mifi

for £40

Or I buy a mobile with
- Bluetooth
- Mobile hotspot technology

You might be able to turn off mobile data to improve your battery life. Other option (albeit not as ideal) would be to carry around a second battery.
