Bad Apple did tell me off a bit for giving up, not unkindly. He did say it was not a bad idea to move on sometimes. But that did niggle a bit, so today I had another look at it and this time I have succeeded.
What I had not tried before was adding a printer via CUPS on the laptop. I had worked from the settings manager only. Anyway I had both computers running and the printer on. On the laptop I went to localhost:631 and clicked on Add a printer. To my surprise the network printer was found so I went through the various screens, including selecting the driver and the new printer appeared.
I have now checked it several times and it works!! I don't know why I didn't think of this before. So, Bad Apple, I do sometimes give up after a reasonable go at something, but I do then often come back later.
