Re: [LUG] IP Tannoy

Thanks, Gordon. We do have asterix at this site, but I think we're going to need a bit more volume. Actually have a reasonable budget for this project, and are thinking of lots of possibilities, just struggling to find a UK supplier.

Not strictly linux (well, linux can do this), but some clever people in

We have a large indoor arena with outlying stables. We need to upgrade the
existing, and elderly, PA system which uses 100v speakers and it's been
suggested putting speakers in the outlying buildings would be quite useful.

Up until that point I'd only been thinking of like-for-like replacement and
adding more speakers, but then I wondered about IP as a solution as we have
a 100mbit network covering most areas already and have quite a lot of POE
included if that's an option (Although the -af standard limits it to 47vdc
at 1a, which may not be enough for a decent speaker and mains may also be
needed).

A quick google suggests IP (multicast/SIP) speakers exist, and Rob's spent
some time and come up with a broadcaster. (He also suggested an rpi, but I
really want this to be foolproof and am looking for some sort of embedded
box that can take multiple inputs, perhaps with faders, and magic them into
something the speakers can use. We need 2 or 3 inputs and mono only - just
a box that'll sit there and do its thing would be perfect.)

I wondered if anyone in here had experience in such things, and could share
any positive or negative experiences, any standards to look out for, any
gotchas or any good suppliers?  Or even cackle wildly, point a finger and
proclaim it'll never work!

I've used VoIP to do this in the past. There are phones (e.g. cheap grandstreams) that can auto-answer and go into speakerphone mode when sent a given command, so from one phone, you can dial a number that plumbs all the other phones into a conference call and enabled their spekerphones (and mutes the microphones!). Asterisk supports this. It works well.

Do not use a RPi for it - it won't handle the packet load. Use a Geode or Atom Mini ITX system.
