Thanks to everyone for their feedback on Android. I can't remember there being a thread on the actual Android system before, as against which is the best phone, much more hardware related. I bought a Pipo Max-M1 directly from Hong Kong for £140. This has the 9.7" screen which I believe is the same as the Ipad 2. I prefer this aspect ratio rather than the 10.1" screens. Watching the DHL tracking as it made its way to me was fascinating.

Rob, I wanted a tablet and of the choices, Apple, Microsoft and Google, it was no contest. I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised that Google wants to control so much, but I don't have to like it. I've had a Gmail account for a long time now with no problems but this is a big step further. I know that there are other mobile type distros coming along but, as far as I can see, they have a way to go yet.

I now have to look into the things like the anti-theft software and Google alternatives. I assume that rooting give total control of what you can do with the device so I'll have a good look at that. Incidentally, I went to install Skype and backed out of it after reading the list of what it is allowed to do to your device. Has it got worse since Microsoft got hold of it?

seem to be posting a lot today. Amazingly since MS bought skype it got it's first linux upgrade for years and is much less buggy, no random crashes! And for a multi purpose communication application, SMS, video, text chat over wifi and 3G etc. I'm not sure there is much skype won't need to do to a phone/tab in terms of access.

there is always stuff like oovoo, though the linux version promised in 2007 hasn't appeared. And almost certainly it will need the same access rights as skype.
