Just wondering.

Well speaking from personal experience, I have a home server to store important stuff like photos, documents, e-mails (I have an e-mail server so I can get my mail from away from home) etc. I also store music and video files on there too. I find it's handy to do this as having multiple machines in the house it means I have one place to store stuff and the server has hard drives in a RAID array which gives a little bit more redundancy than the single drive in my laptop (which has failed about 3 times in 4 years).

I also have MythTV and PS3 Media Server installed on the server to transcode media for my PS3 and record video from Freeview which can then be played on any of the PCs in the house (although having a Tivo box I find that I don't use it so much now).

You might find though that you can probably suffice with online services such as Dropbox for online storage, GMail etc for e-mail, Picassa or Flickr for photos etc.
