I guess the OP uses Linux for day-to-day home usage, which as far as I'm aware doesn't require knowledge on how to run a server. It doesn't even require understanding why someone would want to run such a server in the first place. So I think it's a fair question. I think Phil gave a good answer - though wasn't it Gordon who recently pointed out that renting a VPS might actually be cheaper given the cost of electricity?
