My laptop is running 12.04 quite happily.I'm on 11.10 on my desktop in Gnome Shell mode with the Unity 2D Panel (the bit down the right).
I'll move to 12.04 in a few weeks and give full Unity & Compiz another go. My nVidia 6000 series card slowed Compiz down to a crawl under 11.10 - Sounds like I might have to swap back to my Gnome Shell/Unity 2D combo or buy a newer (better supported) graphics card with 12.04 :(
