As noted in the GNOME 3 docs they were specifically trying to avoid
dumping stuff on the desktop as it is considered a generally bad habit in
terms of efficiency and organisation (yes they are subtly trying to get us
to work more efficiently - the bastards). They don't want the desktop
metaphor, so probably why you aren't getting there.

As noted here previously install GNOME UI tweaks and put the file manager
in charge of your desktop and it'll allow you to indulge your bad habits,
but probably if you think of Windows managers as "Desktops" then Windows 7
and GNOME aren't going in the direction you want to go.

So.. let me get this right... 20 years ago we had a windowing environment, then MS invented this "desktop metaphor" ... Now we're going back to the pure windowing thing...

I'm sure it's not as simple as that, but if so, it's making me chuckle ;-)
