To avoid the reset button could you have used the Ctrl Alt F1 to drop to a shell,
kill firefox (ps ax | grep firefox) then go back using Ctrl Alt F7 ?

which flash player have you ?

I have on fedora
with
rpm -qa | grep firefox
firefox-3.6.23-1.fc14.i686

# rpm -qa | grep flash
flash-plugin-10.2.152.27-release.i386

or Deb is
sudo dpkg --get-selections | grep flash
