I think there might be price mechanisms which would get the seller a
better price. If one established a competing market the seller could
choose where to sell. No doubt the established players wouldn't like it
and would try and stall it....

No - they're for avoiding market effects like price variation due to sales and purchases - you know the things we are told are good for us really - like competition which is stamped out at the first opportunity with sole trader agreements and other lock-ins etc.
