Dear Rob & Kevin,
Thanks for responding.
'She who must be...' wanted to go shopping so I made straight for the mega Tescos in Camborne as they are good for Linux mags! Found the Sept 'Linux Format' with the new Mint on disc. Unfortunately my old laptop ain't x86 BUT there was a copy of the new Mandriva fork 'Mageia 1' and it went on and is up and running handsomely! Evidently mageia means magic in Greek and so it's proving at the moment!
Cheers,

Are you sure you're not confusing x64 (aka AMD64*, i.e. 64-Bit) with x86 (aka 32-Bit)?

Chances are unless your PC is more than about 13 years old Mint should boot. Usually Linux Format will provide the 32-Bit PC compatible ISO image which will work on most PCs rather than the 64-Bit version.

* Personally I still use The Inquirer name for AMD64, iAMD64 :-) and Itanic for Itanium (Intel's original 64-Bit architecture IA64)
