Thanks for responding.
'She who must be...' wanted to go shopping so I made straight for the mega Tescos in Camborne as they are good for Linux mags! Found the Sept 'Linux Format' with the new Mint on disc. Unfortunately my old laptop ain't x86 BUT there was a copy of the new Mandriva fork 'Mageia 1' and it went on and is up and running handsomely! Evidently mageia means magic in Greek and so it's proving at the moment!

I would say Mint too

I use a USB stick to boot errent PC's up with Mint on it

you need a 4 gig one to install it first on the USB stick then run it as
a Live on the PC
Mint has Gparted on so you can check the partitions
