And the one Paul tried in neither of the above but does include the
Chrome browser, it is nothing to do with Google, and appears to be
knocked together using SuSE Studio (a point and click interface to
create your own installation media for customised GNU/Linux distros) and
apparently named "Chrome OS Linux" to create maximum confusion.

ChromeOS is I think rather more than "a couple of bells and whistles",
on top of Chromium, it is run on pre-set hardware which sorts all that
boot and hardware detection rubbish, and all the cloud stuff which
Google see as central is just not there. I think there is genuinely a
change of mindset here, a much needed one.
