If google+ conveniently integrates with google talk/chat it could be
quite good as a microsoft skype alternative, especially for those no
longer happy to use skype?

Of course, you could use FB (et al) and google talk separately should
you wish. But it seems sensible/convenient to keep online contacts and
video chat together?

Yup, tried the conference video call on my mint machine between 4 people, it worked flawlessly on chrome and FF.
