Hmm.. not sure how useful it would be to find out. This is the first time I've been in this situation, and probably the last. What mode-switch does is to forcibly tell the USB stack that when device XYZ is inserted it needs to identify it as a USB serial port (in many cases). I do not know the ins and outs of the USB stack well enough to know how easy it would be to do this manually. Grant.
