When it comes to business, I tend to agree with you;  Let them get on
with it.  However, some of our taxes goes to line the pockets of a
certain well-known USA-ian software vendor.  Schools, government, NHS,
etc. could all use a *nix system thereby avoiding the need to pay
Microsoft

Many people, well some (maybe) would argue that the cost of re-writing
all that custom software to run on a Linux machine would be
prohibitive.  I dis-agree.  The donkey work has already been done, all
that's required is porting to the new OS.  Certainly this entails a
cost, but one that can be re-couped far more easily.  Saving money in
Windows(tm) licenses alone would go a long way.  Any software company
worth its salt should be able to port their apps and maintain support
without too much issue.
