I just received a similar call myself. The guy claimed to be calling
from BT and he told me someone had downloaded or malicious file from
my computer or something. Told me to follow his instructions which I
did, hoping he would give me some information that I could use (e.g.
to submit a bad URL to a blacklist) but ended up giving up too early:
didn't want to do too many dodgy things on my work laptop and don't
know enough about Windows Event Viewer and the likes to give him
sensible answers without having to do what he said.

What worried me most though is that he seemed to be calling from a
busy call centre.

Wish they'd call me.... However number is ex. directory and TPS, etc. registered. I suspect they won't call my published office number though.

If you do get a cold caller - for whatever reason, not just scams... See if you can keep them going for over 90 seconds. If they're in a call centre, and using BT (although you'll never know), then BT have a call centre rate that gives them the first 90 sconds of a call free[1], but after 90 seconds it's the full call rates. So it would soon become not profitable for them...

[1] Nothing's free - they typically pay a hefty line rental and long term contract for this deal, however...
