Hi folks,

One of the things I discovered today is that it's now possible to
download eBooks and audio books from the Torbay Library service. I
thought it was quite a good idea, especially for listening to on the bus
etc.

I went to the web site this evening to find out more details.

Looks however like it's limited to Windows and Mac on desktops and
Android, Windows Mobile, Blackberry and iPhone on mobile.

Nice to see a whole chunk of customers are being left out. Even some of
the stuff available doesn't work on a Mac, so presumably it's all DRM
infected WMA audio and PDFs.

Not sure if the Windows software works under Wine (I'm not a member of
the library, at least if I am I've lost the card) so I can't test it.
I'll probably join up though in the next week or two and give it a try
(it still doesn't appear to be possible to join online).

There is plenty of PD material on the Guttenberg site. Perhaps we should
host something local using open formats like..... Oh I dont know text
maybe and ogg.

Maybe. I just thought it was interesting when I heard about it, I've been listening to a Red Dwarf audio book on the bus and I figured if other audio books are available then it's a great way of catching up especially when I'm driving, but I was disappointed to see that they're tied to a particular platform (ironically the software on Windows gives the option to burn the audio books to an audio CD!).

The other thing I forgot to mention is that the new queuing system in
the library popped up an "automated updates" dialog while Paul and I
were having our drinks at the Library.... The thing is the dialog box
appears just were the prompting number appears thus obscuring it from
view.... Another (expensive) cock up brought to you by Torbay Council IT
department.

Hahahaha!!!! I love it!

I expect one day this machine will display the usual Blue Screen of Death.

I guess I shouldn't laugh, part of our council tax has paid for these junk systems.
