I think you missed reading the manual.

You put the ISO on a USB stick by mounting the bootable file system you
installed on the USB stick with zcat or dd, and using the "cp" command
to copy it onto the filesystem.

For writing ISO images to CDs it is usually easier just to right click
on the ISO icon in Nautilus and select the burn CD option from the drop
down menu than fight the command line.

Although I think for writing the ISO with wodim the command you give
looks plausible. What actually happened when the command was issued -
did it appear to write and you just got a CD that wouldn't boot? Did you
try it on a machine you know boots from CDs successfully?
