I don't imagine google had directional antenna sprouted in all
directions, at a guess just larger/more sensitive general one/s. Most
likely at the top of their camera assembly somewhere, it would be most
logical?

Google have been using this data since well before the Streetview cars did their tour of the country, so I doubt it's part of the same survey, despite what the New Scientist thinks.

As others have said, the information is often broadcast well past the boundary of your house. If you don't want to broadcast your data, don't use wi-fi.
