When it freezes, can you Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get to the terminal? It could just be X that is freezing. If so you should be able to look through the logs and see what's going on.

Mint7, its how I installed to this laptop originally.

Only a 1GB stick so there wasnt a lot of room but i gave it a 256mb
persistance.

Just not sure if there'd be time for it to write about a problem when
it freezes dead like that. Maybe about the touchpad going dead, but
thats a minor irritation...
