just an idea, as the same topic seems to come up every so often.

Heh... Being a Linux group what we should do of-course is build our own out of a Linux PC with a few Ethernet cards and/or ADSL cards... (Says the man who's just bought 2 Wi-Fi access points rather than cobble together a monstrosity out of PCI cards, USB adapters, etc.) However my main router is Linux, has 5 Ethernet ports an acts as a mini Ethernet switch... runs 2 servers via virtualisation, beats as it sweeps as it cleans...

Looks like this might be handy too:

Not exactly sure how it works - hopefully it's a PPPoA <-> PPPoE bridge onna card... Although it comes with drivers...

Wish I had more than one PCI slot on my motherboard...

And as Rob says, I like and use Draytek stuff - it's mostly OK - I like it because it has reasobably effective traffic shaping for the VoIP stuff I do, but it is expensive - the RRP of the 2710n (with Wi-Fi & USB) is £119+VAT. (Broadbandbuyer has them for £114.49 inc vat - Draytek do a nice discount to dealers if they buy a box of 10 at a time - something I can't do, but the bigger on-line places will be able to get that)

The 2710 doesn't do fall-over to 3G via the USB though - the 28xx series do - if that's an issue, however they are "reassuringly expensive"...

So while it's easy for me (or more likely one of my resellers) to go into a small/medium company to install network/lan/voip as an all-in-one service, I think it's hard for individuals to justify that sort of price for a home device...

The only other device I've had experience of recently is DLink - which you've currently got - but a quick look at broadbandbuyer isn't finding me any with a USB port for printer type functions...

Hows about an idea for a local project - We put a specification (maybe more of a "HowTo" together for a small Linux box - Low power motherboard, capable of taking 1 or 2 SATA drives, 2 (or more) Ethernet ports, suitable kernel configuration, and so on.... ? Won't be as cheap as a consumer grade router though!!!
