I did some research on this after watching Avatar 3D at Vue Exeter, it seems the lenses in the cinema 3d goggles are 'Circularily polarised'. Basically this means if you take 2 pairs and put the right lens over the left one of the second pair at 90 degrees it should be blocking all light, or letting it all through, if you managed 270 degrees.

Because of the polarisation this is how the glasses are able to act as shutters,stuff for the right eye is off 90 degrees to the left one.

They also need a silver layer on the back of the movie screen, as a normal screen alters the polarisation slightly.
