Not sure if you could use disk labels. I've got my external USB hard drive formatted as EXT3 with a label, that way it always mounts the same place when I plug it in (okay I know there are probably 100's of other ways of doing it). I believe
Grub supports these label names.

I'm pretty certain too using DD it would transfer the UUID's although I'd not want the hassle of re-sizing the partitions.
