I like them, because if i add or remove a partition the partition IDs dont change where hda2 might become hda5 but yeah, this be the tradeoff because I beleive those UUIDs are assigned by whatever makes the partition. And iirc, one of those U's stands for Unique, so I doubt you can transfer them :(Not sure if you could use disk labels. I've got my external USB hard drive formatted as EXT3 with a label, that way it always mounts the same place when I plug it in (okay I know there are probably 100's of other ways of doing it). Grub supports these label names.I'm pretty certain too using DD it would transfer the UUID's although I'd not want the hassle of re-sizing the partitions.
