With thanks to all, after a useless day at least one thing fixed

1/ In /etc/default/grub, uncommented the line
"GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_UUID=true"

2/ Following on http://grub.enbug.org/Debian

Ran "upgrade-from-grub-legacy"

3/ and then of course "update-grub"

Not quite sure which step worked but now I am on the current kernel
