I just got a weird call - form someone saying they were from

'Sorry not interested' *click* :)
What got me was the fact the speaker had asian voice patterns
but an American 'accent'

Had surreal phone call today from "HSBC" who called on my mobile and said
could I confirm identity for a non urgent matter.

Said I would ring HSBC back to confirm and was told to advise it was
"Fraud department, reference D1"

Rang HSBC back looking up the number from their website and HSBC advised
that no call had been made.

Checked my mobile for caller ID, rang "0800 0330 4909", and got a
message saying it was HSBC.

I have no idea whether it was a phishing expedition or not. I presume
yes.

You'll find out when your account is blockd... Get an online statement now, if you can.

That number is issued by BT, but it could be presented from any number of services, but someone, somewhere has gone to the effort of getting an 0800 number from BT and putting an answering machine at the end.

The last time my card was blocked, I was in Austrailia and my bank (prat west) only had an 0845 number. Fortunarely the hotel had broadband, I had my laptop and USB phone and VoIP... They don't check incoming caller ID (or didn't at the time).

Use this site:

  http://www.telecom-tariffs.co.uk/codelook.htm

to see who "owns" a phone number.

And another tip - just google the phone numbe - with and without spaces in various formats. That one comes up blank though.
