These days it will start in the boot.

Probably you need to identify why sometimes it doesn't. Most likely it
starts and crashes.

One of the occasions it works, go back and inspect the log files of
previous boots for oddities relating to "keyboard", "hil". Probably
kernel log, Xorg log, .xsession-error (is it console or only in X that a
problem occurs).

Probably easiest is figure out when it does/doesn't work.

You said it was an upgrade? So did it always work before? What kernel
version was the system before?

Is it a cold/warm reboot thing? i.e. Does it work if you power off for 4
seconds, but not if you just reboot in software. That would point to a
BIOS issue. I had a laptop whose trackpad never worked after booting MS
Windows until you did a cold reboot for example, apparently the Windows
driver tweaked settings in volatile storage in the hardware.

Also you say the Live CD works, so is there a kernel version difference
(try the kernel used in the LiveCD if it'll let you downgrade that far),
or are you always cold booting for CDs?
