once it boots and the networking works, the rest can be downloaded. I did retain the original OS so I could poke around that if needed. I was using gentoo but in the end i ditched it because I couldn't get the intel graphics driver to perform and went to ubuntu netbook remix and all the drivers are there and working out of the box.

I plan to try gentoo again to squeeze some more speed out though. But the battery or charging circuit has died so I will wait until I've got that issue sorted out.
