i have an image gallery on rollovers that would load a 400x400px image when a 140x140 image is rolled upon. It doesn't usually cause problems, but just in case, maybe I will have the larger image as the smaller image, so it caches and you can tell when it loads.
Using mousovers etc for things that are in the general flow of web pages is 'OK' - tips and extratext etc. Doing the above is borderline acceptable - so long as the user knows its going to happen it would be OK and it is used a lot. Rolling over a link and having something you expect to need to be clicked that loads other web pages is not generally accepted as good practice - you're surprising the user by taking control away from them and loading possibly unwanted content 'for them'. Its a bit like helping the old lady across the road and finding out she was waiting for a bus and its just gone... Let the user have control and offer assistance by all means but remember its their web browser and bandwidth. And its not too hard to click a link is it?

I disagree, all this does is give a preview of a page they might like to
visit. I think it's a while since bandwith ran on coco tins and string.

Its not just about bandwidth - its also about how the web works. What you are putting up in your Iframe is not a preview it IS the website - if the user clicks on the links in there they all work. Sure have mouseovers if you want to précis the site yourself but what your doing is sort of taking over something thats not yours to put it badly...
